A Message from the Athletic Director of École Okanagan Mission Secondary School, Kelowna, British Columbia
On behalf of OKM, our staff, students, families and community partners we would like to welcome you to the beautiful Central Okanagan and acknowledge that we live, work and play on the unceded, traditional territories of the Syilx People. Congratulations on qualifying for the 2022 AAAA Girls Volleyball Provincial Championships. Qualifying itself is an amazing accomplishment, and is something that very few student-athletes get to experience! With over 450 member schools and over 70,000 student-athletes, you have earned the privilege to represent your community and your school to fight for a provincial title.
I would encourage all participates in this years 2022 AAAA Girls Volleyball Provincial Championships to recognize the significant time spent by their coaches, team managers, parents, other volunteers, and school teachers given in their pursuit of your dreams and goals. Countless hours given by all these volunteers make school sport a reality. I would encourage an effort to thank all of those people who have made your season possible.
Thank you to all of those who have been involved in planning this AAAA Girls Volleyball BC Provincial Championships at Okanagan Mission Secondary; OKM’s Championship Host Committee, lead by Lindsey Friesen, and our OKM volunteer committee, who have put in countless hours (or months), beginning last May, preparing for this weekend. Thank a volunteer this weekend for all they have done.
Athletes, I truly understand all that it takes to earn a berth into a Provincial Championship and the benefits of sport. As a high school student-athlete and then as a coach, both at Okanagan Mission Secondary School, I have been fortunate to compete in a variety of BCSS Provincial Championships, with a timeline that spans decades. The sacrifice and hard work by athletes is real. At the start of every season, the goal is to earn a berth and then win a provincial title for your school. However, the lessons learned through sport are perhaps the most important thing to me, as a coach and father, including the life lessons of hard work. Being held accountable, sacrifice, learning to be a team player, sportsmanship, resiliency, goal setting, and learning the ability to fail to succeed and learn are character attributes that build the foundations for good leaders and successful futures.
I sincerely wish all athletes and coaches the very best throughout this championship weekend. Remember to always represent yourself and your community well and display respect to your opponent and officials. I hope the 2022 AAAA Girls Volleyball BC Championships provides you strong competition, fair play, and memories that will last a lifetime.
